About BEmet
Specialist resources for emetophobia, from someone who understands how isolating it can feel.
The BEmet Project exists because finding good support for emetophobia is harder than it should be. Few therapists have specialist training in this kind of fear, and few of the people around you, friends and family included, really get what it's like to live with. That can leave you feeling alone with something that already feels isolating. BEmet adds another specialist voice to that, for anyone who hasn't yet found one that fits.
Emetophobia is also easily misunderstood. Unless you've lived with it, it's hard to grasp how much of life it can take up, from food to travel to the plans you make, or the ones you don't. No two people experience it in the same way either, so being met as a whole person matters more than anything.
BEmet was created by Caroline Cowley, an emetophobia specialist and counsellor with personal as well as professional experience of the fear. It brings together resources for people living with emetophobia and the families who love them, alongside training for therapists and others working in education and healthcare. BEmet isn't a therapy service in itself. It's a calm, specialist space to understand the fear, find your footing, and know you're not the only one. If you're looking for one-to-one emetophobia therapy, online across the UK or in person in Birmingham, Caroline offers that separately through Caroline Cowley Counselling.
The thinking behind BEmet is person-centred and pluralistic. It starts with people, not problems: there's no single right way through emetophobia, and what helps depends on you, your history, and what you need right now. It also rests on the understanding that emetophobia makes sense. It's a protective response, your system doing its best to keep you safe, that learned somewhere along the way to treat this one thing as a serious threat. Seeing how that happens, and what keeps it going, is often where change begins, not only in how you think about the fear but in how it feels to move through your day.
Whatever has brought you here, and however long you've lived with this, you're welcome exactly as you are. BEmet is here whenever you're ready, somewhere to breathe out a little.
